The mission of every good journalist is to seek the truth and to tell that truth to the world, but it is not so easy when that truth is shrouded in half-truths, lies, denial and misinformation. Those who are dedicated to their profession are not easily fooled. The more a truth is denied the more valuable that information becomes and some, like Anna Politkovskaya, are willing to give their lives for the integrity of their profession. I am honoured to be associated with the RAW in WAR Anna Politkovskaya Award, in recognising her we are recognising many other unsung heroines who put their lives at risk to bring us the truth. We honour Anna and the first recipient of this Award today, Natalia Estemirova. Let us listen to the truths they tell us – and act on them – they deserve nothing less.
