Anna Politkovskaya - Telegraph Sir – Today marks the second anniversary of the murder of the Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
We the undersigned are all supporters of the human rights organisation RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in War). Yesterday we presented the annual Anna Politkovskaya Award, set up to recognise women defending human rights in zones of war and conflict, to Malalai Joya from Afghanistan. She lives a life of courage in the face of grave danger, just as Anna did.

Message from Lord Judd for RAW in WAR Anna Politkovskaya Award
Anna Politkovskaya remains a challenging example of selfless courage and integrity
in journalism. That she was so cold bloodedly murdered will forever raise profound
questions about the prevailing realities in Russia. Truth could not be accommodated.
There are other countries besides Russia where Anna's example and this prize in her
honour sadly are high relevant. Afghanistan is one. Today we therefore not only
warmly congratulate the prizewinner, but also demonstrate our solidarity with all those
NGO’s, academics, professionals and other individuals who bravely make their stand
for the better future they want to achieve.
Women and girls are still too often the victims of war, tyranny and oppression.
Physically abused and psychologically damaged, their plight demands our total
commitment to their support. The biggest task of all, however, is to strive for the
justice and freedom, which underpin decent society. There is no room for
complacency - anywhere.

The winner of RAW in WAR’s second annual Anna Politkovskaya Award is Malalai Joya from Afghanistan. Malalai Joya (30) was the youngest elected member of Afghanistan's national parliament in 2005 and past elected delegate for Afghanistan's historic constitutional assembly, the Loya Jirga. At the age of 25, she spoke out against ex-mujahedeen warlords, who dominated Afghanistan's constitutional assembly and now are members of the country's national parliament.

They finally met in November 2003 - the journalist Anna Politkovskaya and the policeman Sergei Lapin - in the tumbledown building of the Oktiabrsky District Court in Grozny. He was accompanied by a heavily armed and camouflaged escort of several armored personnel carriers. She was with several of her friends, each of whom had suffered in one way or another at the hands of Lapin and his associates. Anna Politkovskaya Award 5 Oct 2007 |
 |
 |
Natalia Estemirova Sunday 7 October will mark the anniversary of the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, the campaigning Russian journalist and outspoken government critic, who exposed the brutal treatment of civilians in Chechnya at the hands of both the Russian forces and the Moscow-supported Chechen officials. No closer to having her assassin brought to justice, one year on, the Kremlin remains reluctant and shows no political will to identify who ordered the killing and to see justice done. Not much has changed in Russia and Chechnya since Anna’s killing last October: independent journalists continue to die in mysterious circumstances; civil society is stifled by draconian government laws and regulations. In Chechnya, torture, rape, disappearances and killings of civilians are a daily occurrence.
